Some pieces of furniture are so ubiquitous that the names of their designers become almost forgotten. It’s the case of the Butterfly chair, originally called BKF or Hardoy, born in Buenos Aires in 1938. Created by LeCorbusier’s former students - Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan e Jorge Ferrari Hardoy - this chair enjoyed great success because it was comfortable, light, portable and washable. In 1940, the curator for industrial design at the MoMa, Edgar Kaufmann Jr., put the chair on exhibition at the museum, thus adding to its worldwide fame. Once in the public domain, the design generated millions of reproductions. Boa Safra’s Butterfly chair is made in Portugal and can be used either indoors or outdoors. The frame is available in black and white, other colours made to order.
